Google+ is the newest social network, launched earlier this week to much buzz.
I’ve been running into a lot of people who detest the idea of yet another social network. There is an overwhelming feeling of fatigue, distrust, and general boredom with the oversharing brought about by social media.
This is an attempt to remedy the following issues with social:
- Reciprocity -Google+ does not require you to follow anyone who has decided to place you in one of their circles. If you put Oprah in your “Movers and Shakers” circle, she doesn’t have to return the favor before you can see info on her bookclub.
- Overshare – You can organize your circles with a splendid amount of nuance. TMI Friends, Trusted Coworkers, Gossips – you want it, you can have it. On top of being able to have the most multi-faceted set of circles, you can also choose to share updates with only particular groups.
- Information Farm – In order for many webapps and smaller social sites to participate with facebook, you have to agree to let them have access to a startling amount of information. At the moment there isn’t any integration with outside sites, but fortunately Google has pretty much every functionality you need right there.
And just to heap awesome upon awesome, let’s not forget Huddle and Sparks. Huddle is webcam interaction with your far-flung friends – always good times, in my book. Sparks is an aggregation system based on your interests. I’m not really super sure what it does, but as I spend more time being a complete nerd… I will be sure to tell you.
